21.5.2010 Tara's DLA genetic profiling test results

Back in (was it now .. hmm) February this year we had blood samples taken Tara for DLA testing and from Dante just for general genetic research. This test basically looks for different haplotypes in dogs blood (if I am not getting this completely right) and if you consider breeding your dog, this is a very valuable tool for that.

If you choose a male for your bitch that has different results from your bitch, you have a good chance to improve the genetic make-up of the future litter. By choosing diversity (mum and dad of the litter have different haplotypes and not just inbreeding coef that is 0%) to your breeding programme, in the long run we will have a much healthier breed. I am hardly no expert in this and there are people who know so much more, so I suggest you turn to them if you would like to have more info or advice.

Tara is Whip3 and Whip13. I think the result is very very good and as especially this Whip13 is not very common, so it is even better if we end up breeding her in the future.

Here is a list of how often different haplotypes can be found in whippets' genetic make-up (This list was made by Marjaana Siltanen from Kennel Sökövintin who has been a fantastic help in this whole thing):

  • Whip1 37,7%
  • Whip2 14,2%
  • Whip3 20,9%
  • Whip4 8,2 %
  • Whip5 5,4 %
  • Whip6 5,4 %
  • Whip7 3,5 %
  • Whip8 0,9 %
  • Whip9 0,6 %
  • Whip10 0,6 %
  • Whip11 0,3 %
  • Whip12 0,3 %
  • Whip13 0,6 %
  • Whip14 0,9 %
  • Whip15 0,3 %
